|Can't live with 'em, can't shoot 'em.
Sunday mornings aren't fun with my little guy. They are wrought with tension - pre-visitation anxiety. Usually his dad picks him up around noon, give or take. And anticipating the transition inspires clinging and whining in my son, Pooka Doodle. Things get so unbearable that by the time noon rolls around, I'm not sad that he's going, I'm doing a dance of joy behind the door as it closes! I hate that - sure, I ought to enjoy by time off from the intensity of a six-year-old with special needs but I shouldn't be that relieved - should I? ( Read more...Collapse )

Sex worker is a person who works in the commercial sex trade like a dancer, escort, erotic masseuse, call girl or boy, etc. In the U.S. this profession employs hundreds of thousands, most likely millions of women and lesser numbers of men. Because it is a criminalized profession for the most part - with the exception of exotic dancing and prostitution in some counties in Nevada, workers are subjected to discrimination, violence and abuse, often at the hands of law enforcement or police. Since this is a multi-million dollar industry that has resisted all attempts throughout history to disappear, activists are organizing around the world to decriminalize prostitution or sex work, as we like to call it. We work by lobbying, demonstrating, researching and publishing, holding academic and community forums as well as performance art events. I'm a filmmaker, so I have made one film on the subject and organized arts, academic and political events. I speak to the media and at colleges and universities on occasion about why our country's attitude toward sex work is damaging to all women.
At it's core anti-prostitute ideology is about a fear of women having sexual power. Women often end up in sex work because they are limited as to how much income they can earn in the legal sectors. Also, the may have young children, be single parents or going to college - all of which make it difficult to earn a living wage because of limited working hours available. Sex work enables some of the poorest most powerless traditionally to become among the more affluent and thus powerful.
|Meditation or Activism
My dillema today, well, it's actually not a dilemma and that's troubling! Tonight is an organizing meeting for the Sex Worker Arts and also my meditation class! I've missed meditation for the past few weeks and I don't want to miss it and I'm not conflicted at all. I definitely want to go to meditation rather than the sex worker meeting. Does this mean I'm getting old? Maybe I'm just bored of the sex worker activism. I would love to see the young people take over that work.
I'm so tired. Went to bed at 2am. I couldn't sleep after cleaning the kitchen and reading. Woke up at 7:30 to preapre for my son, hurricane pooka doodle, to come back from his dad's house.
I came home tonight to this: pots, pans, dishes and opened foods stewn about the kitchen counters, an opened margarine tub, an uncapped aerosol can of pam cooking spray, a handmade, italian linen dishtowel covered in thick smears of chocolate, a broken plate also smeared with melted chocolate, the settlement cook book, opened to the griddle cakes page, which was suddenly sporting a huge, frying pan shaped scorch mark across it. it smelled like burnt oil and pancakes.
And I wasn't mad at all - amused is all. Because, my daughter, the responsible party is leaving for college in less than six months. I'm not ready to come home to an orderly kitchen, everything in it's place, no surprise stains, spills or fires.
